Dad, You Need to Listen to Your Heart!
June can mean a lot to any father. For some, this is a month in which they get to watch high-school children transition into an exciting new stage of life. June also marks the beginning of summer fun for many families and, of course, Father’s Day is celebrated at this time of year. There’s one more thing about June that makes it notable: it’s National Men’s Health Month.
We don’t really need a national observance month to know that health is a critical point of focus for all people. However, statistics indicate that the average lifespan for men is approximately five years shorter than women. This could have something to do with another statistic, the one that reveals men are less likely to see the doctor on a regular basis. While men have an increased risk of all of the top ten leading diseases, they are particularly vulnerable to heart disease. Here, we discuss some of the cardiac warning signs that all men should pay attention to.
Heartburn, Nausea, And Indigestion
Gastrointestinal symptoms like heartburn, nausea, and indigestion could occur for many reasons. However, these may also be indicators of a cardiac event such as a heart attack. In most cases of a heart attack without chest pain, these symptoms are reported by women, not men. Still, it is valuable knowledge to have in your back pocket to protect your health or the health of someone you love.
Lightheadedness And Dizziness
Most people have felt dizzy at some point in their lives. Maybe you have experienced dizziness or lightheadedness when you’ve stood up quickly or been on a particularly topsy-turvy amusement park ride. Usually, it is possible to identify the cause of dizziness immediately. However, there is also a chance that unexplained lightheadedness or dizziness could be related to heart arrhythmia, cardiomyopathy, or heart attack.
Fatigue
Exhaustion may feel like the norm these days due to our penchant for burning the candle at both ends. It is essential to pay close attention to fatigue, though, because it could indicate a health problem that needs to be treated. If performing activities such as carrying groceries become difficult or windedness occurs more quickly than it used to, a medical exam should be scheduled as soon as possible.
Historically, masculinity has been characterized by vitality and physical health; yet more men than ever are being affected by potentially serious health conditions. This is not a statistic that is beyond our control to correct. Do your part in making positive changes. Schedule an appointment for a thorough physical exam and begin keeping a watchful eye on your overall health.
